Unintentional Plagiarism

It's common knowledge that if you crib part or all of your paper from someone else, whether a fellow student, a web site or a published article or book, it's plagiarism. It's a serious violation of academic integrity and carries major penalties. Many students don’t realize that Union Institute & University subscribes to plagiarism-detecting software and most faculty members are experts at spotting plagiarized papers.  Fortunately, it's very easy to avoid those penalties: don't cheat and you'll be fine!

However it's also possible to commit plagiarism unintentionally, and that can get you in trouble too. Unintentional plagiarism means that you didn't mean to cheat, but you still committed a violation of academic integrity by failing to acknowledge the sources of your ideas, or by being too dependent on someone else's ideas.
  • Forgetting to cite, citing incompletely, or citing the wrong source.
  • Paraphrasing without a citation. It's often said that if you put the other person's ideas into your own words, you don't need to cite. That's not true!!! You must cite, even if you didn't quote them word for word.
  • Relying too much on your source material, especially paraphrasing too much (even with citations.) Being overly dependent on another person's ideas means that your paper isn't original enough to satisfy the requirements of an academic assignment. This usually happens for one of two reasons, or a little of each: either you didn't have enough different sources, or you didn't include enough of your own analysis and interpretation.
If you are struggling with research and writing, there are a number of places to turn:
  • Ask a Librarian - a librarian can help you if you are having trouble finding resources and research materials on your topic. Librarians can also help you cite sources and show you tools that will automatically format your APA or MLA citations!
  • Disability Services - if you know or suspect you might have a disability that is affecting your writing.
  • Writing Resource Center - sample papers, explanations, exercises, and help for every stage of the writing process.
  • your instructor - if you don't understand the assignment, need help choosing a topic, or want to know if you're on the right track.

Many students love Google Scholar@UI&U because it combines the search functionality and familiar interface of Google with the high quality, scholarly resources within the UI&U Library.  Google Scholar@UI&U also has many helpful tools for researchers, including cited by links, date limiters, Zotero integration, my citations, email alerts, author profiles, and other search features.

To access Google Scholar@UI&U, go to the UI&U Library homepage and click the "Articles & Databases" tab.

News Feed Malfunctioning

The UI&U Library’s news feed is malfunctioning. The university web developer and the communications department have been working on the problem for the last several months. Within the next two weeks, we will be changing hosting services and returning to Blogger (a blog hosting service from Google). We hope this will provide a permanent solution. Please excuse any outdated or incorrect information; new announcements will be posted as soon as possible.

Extra, Extra! Read all about it!

We've highlighted a couple newspaper resources over the past few months, but that really just scratches the surface of our newspaper collections. If you find yourself hitting a paywall of your favorite current news source or are wondering how lots of news outlets are handling a particular topic check out the following resources.

National Newspapers Premier provides full-text articles to many of the nation's leading news sources--such as the Boston Globe, the New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune.
National Newspapers Premier publications list screen capture.

Newspaper Source provides access to many local and international newspapers--Minneapolis Star Tribune and Al Jazeera, together at last!--and transcripts to a variety of television and radio news networks including CNN, FOX, NPR, and CBS. You can also set up email alerts for your favorite news sources or subscribe to an RSS feed. (You must have a free ESBCOhost account to use this feature. See the picture below for more information.)
Newspaper Source publications list screen capture.

Finally, maybe you're missing your favorite magazine. Popular Magazines may fill the void with access to The New Yorker, Popular Mechanics, Vogue, Newsweek and much more. One helpful feature of this database is that you can have it read the article to you or download the MP3.
Popular Magazines search result for Newsweek article screen capture.

We've just highlighted a few of our newspaper and current media sources. To find more check out our Primary Sources/Newspapers database list or search for your desired publication from the Journals tab on the library homepage. Any questions? Ask a librarian!

APA & MLA Made Easy

Do you struggle with the APA, Chicago, or MLA styles?  The UI&U Library provides resources to help you to create, format, and manage bibliographies.  One of our newest resources is the Google Scholar@UI&U Citation Tool.  If you enter the title of a book or article you want to cite, Google Scholar will format it into an APA, Chicago, or MLA citation that you can copy and paste into your paper’s bibliography.  Please watch the short video below for a demonstration on how this exciting new tool works.

Resources for Fact-checking

We are constantly being bombarded with information - on the web, on TV, in books, and in conversation. Unfortunately, a lot of it is misinformation. It's not that most people intend to deceive us, but once they've picked up an error, they pass it along.

Fortunately the web makes it possible to fact-check on the fly.  Here are some resources.
  • Consumer Reports - objective product information and reviews
  • DeviceWatch - debunks phony products and gadgets
  • FactCheck.org - fact-checking for the news from the Annenberg Public Policy Center
  • MythBusters.com - from the Discovery Channel TV show that debunks urban legends, old wives' tales, and movie physics, among other things
  • NewsTrust.net - crowd-sourced fact-checking of the news media
  • PolitiFact.com - the least partisan fact-checking source for politics and what politicians say
  • Snopes.com - debunks virus warnings, chain letters, hoaxes, scams, urban legends
  • SourceWatch - crowd-sourced tracing of information to its original intellectual and financial sources, from the Center for Media and Democracy

Important Notice Regarding Interlibrary Loan

The UI&U Library staff will be relocating to Brattleboro, Vermont in June. While access to all of our own online library’s resources and most related services will continue without interruption throughout the transition to a new location, one specific library service will need to be halted temporarily.

Interlibrary Loan: In order to ensure that no materials needing to be returned to other lending libraries will be lost in the mail during our transition period, the lending of all physical interlibrary loan items (including books, videos, and dvds) will be temporarily halted beginning April 1, 2013. This service will resume on July 1st or as soon as library staff members have been relocated to Brattleboro.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Even though circulating items via our interlibrary loan services will be unavailable between April 1 and July 1, we will continue to provide copies of brief documents like journal articles and scanned chapters of books through our interlibrary loan services as usual without interruption throughout this time period.

Please note that our email address library@myunion.edu and phone 800-871-8165 x8747 will remain the same.

Using Images Responsibly

Adding pictures to your PowerPoint, Prezi, or Keynote can help make your presentation come alive, but did you know that just like you need to cite ideas or quotes that you use in your project, you should cite these images as well? And unlike text sources where you can use a few sentences or ideas under the terms of fair use, you always use the whole image which is not allowable by fair use standards--so you need to find images whose creators allow use by the public. These images are gathered under the term "creative commons."
Funny Picture asking you to "insert image here"
FairyFindings 2010
While searching Google Images is so easy, there's a website that makes finding Creative Commons Images just as easy. It's called CC Search at search.creativecommons.org. This service collects images which the creators have chosen to make available for the public's use.

How do you search CC Search and cite your findings?

Step 1: Go to CC Search. In most cases, you'll want to uncheck the two options under the search box (unless you plan to sell your work or you want to change the images you find). Choose your search engine. Do your image search as you would normally.

Step 2: Select an image you'd like to use. In the big black box, look for "Visit Page" and click that box. You want to check the terms of use to make sure it's actually a creative commons image. This takes you to the original image's page--any additional information on the terms of use for the image. In Wikimedia it's under "Licensing"; DeviantArt puts it under the "Details" tab; Flicker puts it in the right sidebar under "Additional Information."

Step 3: Once you've verified that you can use the image, right-click to copy it to your document or to save it and insert it later (Saving is good in case you accidentally delete it.) Also make note of the URL from the address bar.

Step 4: Go to your document. If you've copied the image, right-click to paste the image where you'd like it. If you've saved it, use your insert function to add a picture.

Step 5: Now, you need to cite it. The standard practice is to include the author and year if you can find it and create a hyperlink with that text which links back to the original website.

David Tedrow 2010

Repeat these steps as needed for each of your images. It is a few more steps than just copying from Google Images, but you're now crediting the creator of the images, providing a way to find the image again, and meeting all the standards for using images responsibly.

Abortion? Marriage equality? Gun control? Read both sides of the debate!

U.S. opinion is polarized on a number of different political and social issues.  All too often, these opinions are split along traditional socio-economic lines without being thoroughly researched or considered.  However, critical thinking and civil political discourse requires us to actively explore and consider alternative perspectives.

Whether you are researching a topic out of personal interest or required to include an opposing perspective in an academic paper, the UI&U Library’s Opposing Viewpoints in Context database can help you find the necessary background information.  The database has topic pages on a variety of controversial issues such as gun control, abortion, same-sex marriage, capital punishment, nuclear energy, immigration, and more.  Each topic page includes opposing viewpoints, reference materials, historical information, journal articles, and statistics that you can use to begin your research.

The Opposing Viewpoints database can be accessed from the UI&U Library’s all databases page (Library Homepage->Articles & Databases tab->All Databases link).  For assistance using Opposing Viewpoint, please contact a librarian.
